Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a frequent event during evolution of the disease and the mortality risk increases with
its frequency, especially when patients require hospitalization1-3.It is sometimes difficult to distinguish colonization from infection when organisms are found
in sputum cultures from COPD patients. Previous studies using protected specimen from bronchial brushing (Fibre Optic Bronchoscopy ) have shown that bacterial infection could be the etiology in approximately 50% of acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD)4.
