Abstract
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) represents a monoclonal proliferation of lymphoid cells of B cell (70%)
or T cell (30%) origin. The incidence of these tumours increases with age, to 62.8/million population per
annum at age 75 years. A case of Non-Hodgkin lymphoma with right sided pleural effusion of a 35 year
old lady is reported here. Clinically the most important factor is grade, which is a reflection of proliferation
rate. Unlike Hodgkin lymphoma, NHL is widely disseminated at presentation, including at extranodal
sites. The same staging system is used for both HL and NHL, but NHL is more likely to be stage III or IV
at presentation. Overall, the outcome of patients is more dependent on disease histologic features, as
well as prognostic factors, than on the stage of disease. The predominant goal of staging is to identify
patients with truly localized disease who may benefit from a combined modality approach. Early
diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma may lead to cure or permanent remission.
